Fall River recently earned a mention in a New York Times travel feature exploring how Portuguese culture is thriving and evolving in New England. The article, “Tasting a New Flavor of Portugal, in New England” by Christine Chitnis, highlights how our region’s food, art, and traditions continue to draw attention far beyond our borders.

At the center of Fall River’s spotlight is Portugalia Marketplace, described as the largest Portuguese specialty store in the United States. From its salt cod room to the Artigos boutique showcasing contemporary Portuguese ceramics, textiles, and design, Portugalia stands as both a cultural landmark and an economic powerhouse. Owner Michael Benevides also founded the FABRIC Arts Festival, which returns October 9–12, bringing Portuguese contemporary art, music, and performance into the streets of Fall River, New Bedford, and Providence.

The article also notes how Fall River’s creative spirit is visible throughout the city. Public art projects led by the Fall River Arts & Culture Council, Beyond Walls, and Viva Fall River have transformed downtown with vibrant murals, including works by Kevin Ledo and Portuguese artist Diogo Machado, whose striking azulejo-inspired street art reimagines a beloved tradition in a bold, modern way.

Together, these stories illustrate what locals already know: Fall River is not only a keeper of Portuguese heritage, but also a hub where culture is reimagined for the future.
