Govoni learned from two tenor sax greats, Jerry Bergonzi and George Garzone, and furthered his studies by attending Berklee College of Music, studying with the late, great Joe Viola. Govoni hit the road right away with a variety of musical outfits, playing and/or recording with such diverse artists as Grover Washington Jr., Randy Brecker, Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Terri Lyne Carrington, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart, Arturo Sandoval, Cindy Blackman, Oscar Stagnaro, Mark Walker, Joe Beck, Jason Miles, Prassana, Terence Trent D’Arby, Mike Clark, Robben Ford, Tom Brechtlein, Ed Spargo, Mel Tormé, the Manhattan Transfer, the Boston Pops, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the John Allmark Jazz Orchestra, and Frankie Valli, among others.
A year later, Govoni issued his debut album, Breakin’ Out, on the Whaling City Sound label. This was followed up with his CD In the Library the following year.
In 2016 Dino released another recording on the Whaling City Sound label, Chance Meeting. This recording featured drum great Adam Nussbaum, guitarist Jay Azzolina and bassist Dave Zinno.
Dino finished a new recording featuring the great Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums, Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, Henry Hey on piano and Mike Pope on bass. This was released on the Whaling City Sound label later in 2020.
Govoni is currently on the faculty at Berklee College of Music and is a highly respected clinician and guest artist.
John Allmark: Originally from the UK, John was educated at the Chethams School of Music in Manchester and the Royal College in London. Arriving in the US in 1981, he left his classical roots behind and whilst studying with jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Shew, and Hal Crook, embarked on a career as a jazz trumpet player, arranger and band leader.
John is probably best known as the leader of the John Allmark Jazz Orchestra. A group he led for over 30 years, and that performed with many great jazz artists such as Nick Brignola, Randy Brecker, Claudio Roditi, Wycliffe Gordon, Grover Washington Jr, Bobby Shew and many more. John has performed throughout Europe, South America, Russia, and throughout the United States.
For almost 40 years, John has been playing alongside friend and saxophonist Dino Govoni. The Quintet is the culmination of that special musical friendship, and currently, the group is planning its first recording.
