Business Writing Essentials with Michelle DeSaulniers: $199 April 12th – May 10th, 2022. Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm. Course Overview With the advent and use of new and different forms of technology, writing for business is a skill that is even more in demand than ever before. This class provides participants with an opportunity to develop essential business writing skills including determining a clear purpose, assessing the audience to determine their needs, and adapting material for a variety of projects from everyday emails to reports and proposals. This practical workshop will show managers, supervisors, and professionals at all levels how to produce business documents that get read and get results. The format includes class exercises, group discussion, and individual guidance. The course meets for two-hours each week for five weeks. Learning Outcomes
  • Apply the writing process to complete emails, reports, proposals, and other types of writing for business
  • Define audience and purpose prior to starting a writing project
  • Identify how to write clearly, concisely, and effectively
  • Analyze examples of business writing and recognize why the writing is or is not effective
  • Write more clearly, be more persuasive, and write more efficiently
Session I: The Writing Process – Planning
  • Determine the purpose for the message
  • Appraise the audience and their needs
  • Choose the appropriate format for the message
Session II: The Writing Process – Drafting and Revising
  • Generate and organize ideas
  • Compose routine messages
  • Revise for clarity and brevity
Session III: The Writing Process – Editing and Proofreading
  • Recognize and fix grammatical errors
  • Punctuate correctly
  • Choose words appropriately
  • Write clear and concise sentences
  • Compose good and bad news messages
Session IV: Persuasive Writing – Proposals
  • Apply steps of the writing process to prepare a proposal
  • Determine elements of persuasive writing including audience, purpose, intended outcome
  • Use these elements to compose a persuasive proposal
Session V: Writing Effective Email
  • Discuss essential elements of effective email writing
  • Review the dos and don’ts of using email appropriately and effectively
