19-Piece Compaq Big Band w/ Vocalist Lauren Meehan at “Battleship Boogie” – Swing Dance for USS Massachusetts’ 80th Birthday
May 14 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm$40
The 19-piece Compaq Big Band is excited to return to Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA on Saturday May 14th when we’ll be featured at the rousing, vintage-themed “Battleship Boogie’ – a swing dance celebrating the 80th birthday of the USS Massachusetts! The ship is currently undergoing renovations, so the dance will be just onshore inside the Visitors Center at Heritage State Park, 5 Water Street.
There’s an Introductory swing dance lesson 7:00pm to 8:00pm, and the band plays 8:00pm-11:00pm. Tickets are $40 each, all proceeds will be used for the restoration of USS Massachusetts, admission includes hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar will be on site.
Advance purchase of tickets encouraged by going to https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/battleshipcove/items/376444/availability/895057991/book/ but walk-ins welcomed as space permits! Optional 40’s dress would be cool, too.
We’re also REALLY happy that friends from the Boston Lindy Bomb Squad will be onboard for this off-ship cruise, delivering the lesson and performing exciting demos – including some with the band!
This is going to be a lot of fun, and we encourage swing dancers of all levels to come out – singles couples, groups, and meet-ups are all welcome!
In the last two decades, the Compaq Big Band has risen to prominence throughout New England as one of the most accomplished full-size big bands in the region, featuring a cookin’ rhythm section and 14 horns that achieve an ultra-tight sound, with terrific instrumental soloists. To complement this high-powered ensemble, they showcase a rotation of talented jazz vocalists, carry a state-of-the-art sound infrastructure and experienced, full-time sound engineer, and are ultra-focused on unmatched big band production quality.
The Compaq Big Band’s ‘book’ is one of the best in the Northeast. While they’re faithful to traditional Swing Era classics, they really dig their chops into challenging swing and jazz arrangements played by the most approachable yet progressive big bands of the last four decades.
For the “Battleship Boogie” show they’ll feature extraordinary jazz vocalist Lauren Meehan. Born and raised in New Hampshire, she fronted the band for several years in the early 2000’s, adding a sultry and sassy personal style to what being a featured big band vocalist is all about. She now hails from North Carolina, where she has branched out beyond big band to small jazz group formats, including her own successful quartet.
